One study gave high-protein breakfast to young students who routinely skipped breakfast and compared them to a group that ate a normal carb-filled breakfast. The high-protein group ate 130 fewer calories at lunch and total calorie intake was 300 fewer over the course of the day in the high-protein breakfast group. The high-protein group also reported fewer cravings for carbs, such as bread, chips, sweets and calorie dense foods. Appetite ratings were also lower.
Set yourself up for a productive day with High Protein Breakfast
The study showed that cravings were almost non-existent in the high-protein breakfast group. Dopamine and acetylcholine elevates with protein-rich breakfast which prevents obsessive cravings. In contrast, carb-rich breakfasts spike insulin levels and decline just as fast leading to more sugar cravings throughout the day to get the ‘kick’ effect.
Amino acids in protein, particularly glutamine is shown to be effective at decreasing sugar cravings and calming compulsive feelings. It also regulates blood sugar, which leads to less desire for carbohydrates. Studies have shown that supplementing with amino acids such as glutamine and alanine can lead to weight loss, presumably because subjects are less hungry, lowering their total calorie intake.
Hormones Balance with High Protein Breakfast
Studies show that adding protein to your meals helps with satiety by improving leptin sensitivity, the hormone responsible for sending a signal to your brain that you feel full and as a result are less interested in food.
